The Spoke

The Spoke

Hello! I moved to Austin from Alamo Heights in San Antonio in the late ‘60s and “before MoPac.” After graduating from McCallum High School and Texas State University, I taught elementary school. My husband and I began a family in the late 70’s. I was a stay at home mom for several years. I returned to teaching and spent 20 years with middle school students teaching technology applications,  applied arts and journalism, serving as an assistant principal and writing for the local newspapers as a contributing writer.

In 2007 I signed up for watercolor classes. Inspiration   comes from yearly trips to New Mexico and old Austin photographs and nostalgic memories—thus, the airstreams. I use watercolor and pen and ink to create loose illustrations and urban sketches.

Greeting cards of my art at Princess Craft RV Dealership in Round Rock, The Blanton Museum Gift Shop, The Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau–Visit Austin and Breed and Company at both locations-29th Street and Westlake. I enjoy telling stories of old Austin and how much I love painting Austin iconic architecture.

Juried art shows include:

  • The Round Rock Arts Council 2012
  • The annual 5X7 Art Show at the Austin Museum of Art/Jones Center 2012, 2013
  • The Tiny Show at Austin Details + Art on Congress 2012
  • Terra Toys 2015
  • The Violet Crown Art Festival 2015 and 2016

Current Memberships:

  • Waterloo Watercolor Group
  • Capital City Scribes

Former Memberships:

  • Laguna Gloria Women’s Art Guild
  • Association of Texas Photography Instructors (ATPI)
  • University of Texas Interscholastic League Press (UT ILPC)
  • Journalism Educators Association (JEA)

I’m a grandma now and want to make sure my grandkids enjoy childhood and don’t try to rush into our grownup world. I want them to read the classics, appreciate art and understand that not everyone can be in charge! I hope my grandkids remember me as Gigi—the one who taught them to jump on the bed, find shells on the beach and build castles with Legos.

I paint weekly with a group of watercolor artists at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church and sketch twice a month with the South Austin Sketchers. Contact me, using the contact link, if you would like to purchase a watercolor or visit locations listed above where originals, prints or cards are sold. Thank you so much for visiting my site!
